The 2014 La Croix de Beaucaillou has enjoyed a purple patch in recent vintages. The nose on the 2014 appeared to have closed down after bottling, but the quality is still tangible, almost sedate, but exquisitely defined tertiary red berry fruit gradually opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and energetic, very focused with superb mineralité. There is just a mote of hardness and rigidity on the finish, but that will be abraded by bottle age (and this is one Deuxième Vin that benefits from bottle maturity).<br/>

Beautifully located along the Gironde estuary, the Victorian-styled Château Ducru-Beaucaillou sits high above the rest with a breathtaking view of the land and water below. Founded in the 13th century, this estate has seen only five families of successive owners. Today, the château is managed by the Jean Eugène Borie SA company, third generation Bruno-Eugène has acted as CEO since 2003. Due to its exceptional topographic origins, the large stones found across the 75-hectare vineyard provide a unique wine-growing terroir. Ducru-Beaucaillou produces quintessential Saint-Julien wines – fine, elegant, satisfying blends that linger on the palate. Classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé property, the grounds are planted to a mix of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot and equal portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. As a leading Super Second, the Grand Vin is an exemplary classically structured wine of the appellation, combining the grace and grandeur with its subtle cedar and dark fruit notes.
