Château de Sales
Totaling close to 50 hectares of vineyards, Château de Sales is the largest estate in Pomerol. This grand property has actually been owned by the same family for over 500 years. Their vineyards are planted on the northwestern part of the appellation, where the soils are composed of fine gravel and sand with some clay and some amounts of iron oxide, known locally as crasse de fer. The vines are on average over 30-years-old and are primarily made up of Merlot (70%), Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (15% each). To preserve their freshness, fruitiness and terroir expression, the wines of Château de Sales are generally only given 6 months in barrels, of which a maximum of 5% are new (depending on the vintages) to avoid any aggressive stave wood flavors and ensure that they retain their individual personality.
