03: Mittleres Gelb. 17/20 2005 – 2050

I suspect most readers will find it hard to get excited about the 2002 vintage for the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes after what appears to be a prodigious 2001. However, 2002 is a very fine year for this region, possibly superior to any of the vintages between 2000 and 1991. The wines possess plenty of botrytis, but neither the impressive definition nor supreme elegance of the 2001s. This is a sweet, full-bodied, fat, concentrated, intense effort that was showing well in September, 2003.

Very clean aromas of caramel, vanilla and ripe pear. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with dried pineapple character and a light finish. Slightly hollow midpalate. Not as exciting as from barrel, but a pleasant wine. Best after 2006. 3,330 cases made. –JS

Château de Malle
Ranked as a Grand Cru Classé, Château de Malle is also a historic monument found in Sauternes. Open to the public, this estate is surrounded by magnificent Italian styled gardens. Stretching over some of the most sought after land of three communes, Preignac, Toulenne and Fargues, the vineyards straddle the two great appellations, the Graves and the Fargues. After the sudden passing of her husband in the late 1980s, Comtesse de Bournazel has produced exemplary Sauternes ever since. The 55-hectare property is covered by Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle vines. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested to ensure top-maturity, before starting the vinification where the wine is aged in small new-oak barrels for 30 months. The resulting wines are fine and elegant examples of the region, growing in opulence and intensity vintage after vintage. Balanced between fullness and finesse, the Grand Vin De Malle is a very aromatic white, with hints of ripe apricot, lime blossom and acacia honey.
