Château de Fonbel
Château Fonbel is a good value Saint-Émilion that is owned and produced by the famed Château Ausone. Its long history dates from the Roman times when they occupied the region. It was purchased in 1971 by Alain Vaulthier of Château Ausone. Its vineyards are not planted on Saint-Émilion's incredibly famous limestone but rather on clay, sand and gravel, making the wine more accessible when young. In addition to the ubiquitous Merlot and Cabernet Franc, its vineyards are also planted to Petit Verdot and Carmenère, a rare sighting on the Right Bank. The wine is vinified in stainless steel before being aged in French oak barrels, 30% new. Considering its exemplary owner, winemaking savoir-faire and attractive price, it is one of the best value wines produced in Bordeaux.
