Château Calon
Château Canon carries the namesake of Jacques Kanon, the man who first bought the vineyard in 1760. The château now ranks amongst the very finest Premiers Crus, classified as a Saint-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé B. As of 1996, the estate has been under the same proprietorship as Château Rauzan-Ségla, by the Wertheimer brothers, whom are also known for their famous haute couture house, Chanel. After purchasing the property, the brothers decided to heavily invest in the vineyard, the cellars and all of the buildings to restore the château’s Premier Grand Cru Classé status. The Merlot grape variety reigns supreme not only in the appellation, but at Canon as well, with 65% of their 34-hectares planted to this red fruit, with the remaining limestone soil hectares devoted to Cabernet Franc. Making the perfect complementary blend, the Merlot is smooth and supple on the palate while the Cabernet Franc offers the right amount of freshness and structure. The wines are elegant, medium-weighted, and age-worthy examples of Saint-Émilion.
