Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Berliquet (blended of 75% Merlot 25% Cabernet Franc) is a little mute to begin, opening out to expressive kirsch, black plums and black cherry compote scents plus nuances of unsmoked cigars and dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic intensity and energy, with a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins and a lively lift to the mineral-laced finish.

Direct, with a beam of plum and cherry paste flavors, wrapped in black licorice notes. Light fruitcake details score the finish. Fresh acidity provides some lift at the end. Drink now through 2027. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 3,333 cases made. — JM

Château Berliquet
With records dating to the late 1700s, Château Berliquet appears to be one of the most historic properties in Saint-Émilion. From the beginning this estate has always been grouped with the first growths of the appellation, in both the 1828 and 1986 classifications. Berliquet sits just outside of the city of Saint-Émilion on the Magdelaine plateau. Their southwest facing vineyards encompass many Premiers Grands Crus Classés plots. In 2008, Berliquet hired Nicolas Thienpont and Stéphane Derenoncourt to join their team.
