A remarkable achievement in the so-so 1992 vintage for Tuscany, Castello di Ama's 1'Apparita, a 100% Merlot that has been barrel-fermented and aged in new barriques, exhibits an opaque purple color, followed by an exceptionally rich, black-cherry-scented nose with licorice, chocolate, and smoky new oak characteristics. Full-bodied yet extravagantly smooth, rich, and luscious, this intense, beautifully made wine is already delicious to drink, although it is still unevolved. Based on how well past vintages have aged, the 1992 should last for 12-15+ years. The first vintage of this luxury-priced Merlot was 1985. In May, 1997, I tasted a bottle of the 1985 from my cellar and found it to be still youthful and impressive.

Another well-crafted, refined wine with fresh berry, blackberry and light oak aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Made from Merlot. Drink or hold. 1,000 cases made. ?
Producer
Castello di Ama
Castello di Ama, located in Gaiole, is a premium winery in the heart of Chianti Classico. Founded in the 1970s by four Roman families, Castello di Ama has been run since 1982 by trusted winemaker Marco Pallanti and his wife, Lorenza Sebasti, who is also the CEO of the winery. While Castello di Ama is known today for producing Tuscany’s first great Merlot – their L’Apparita, they also craft two smaller versions of single-vineyard Chianti Classico blends, Vigneto La Casuccia and Vigneto Bellavista. This reference-point Tuscan grower-producer is made up of 210-hectares. Of that there are 75-hectares under vine, 45-hectares of olive trees and 100-hectares of woodland and has some of the most beautiful vistas of the Chianti Classico region. Castello di Ama creates extraordinary wines with seven reds, one white, one rosé and one sweet wine currently in production.
