The 2014 Bolgheri Rosso Magari opens to a dark garnet color and pretty ruby highlights. I really love the crispness, acidity and linearity of this vintage that stands so far away from the more opulent and robust editions of the past. Angelo Gaja has interpreted the 2014 vintage very nicely in his beautiful property on the Tuscan Coast. Instead of looking for power and thickness, he strives for finesse and crispness. Yes, the vintage was cooler and wetter, but his skill in obtaining these qualities should not go overlooked. This is a different kind of Gaja wine (made with Merlot and Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc), but a very worthwhile expression nonetheless. I will give it a shorter drinking window, however.<br/>This has been an important year in the wild world of Angelo Gaja. His most prized wines made in Barbaresco have now been returned to full appellation status (they are no longer IGT Langhe). His children, most notably Gaia Gaja, are taking on an increasingly public role to ensure a seamless generational transition. His wines, spanning from Piedmont in the far North of Italy to his two Tuscan estates, are showing consistent results and fully integrated production. This is especially true of his beloved Ca' Marcanda estate in Castagneto Carducci (Bolgheri), the apple of Angelo Gaja's eye. The 2013 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda is an excellent edition of one of the best wines made on the Tuscan Coast. Also very interesting are the elegant and more subdued wines from the 2014 vintage.
Producer
Ca' Marcanda - Gaja
As the Gaja family’s second Tuscan property, situated along Italy’s coast in Bolgheri, Ca'Marcanda was purchased just two years after their Montalcino estate in 1996. Due to the ceaseless discussions that led up to this acquisition, the estate has been named, Ca’Marcanda - the house of endless negotiations. Inspired by the Piedmontese dialect, ca’ meaning casa or house, and marcandè meaning mercanteggiare or to haggle. At the beginning, the family established the house with the intentions of bringing fundamental organic practices to the region’s land and viticulture. Today, the property is one of the country’s finest producers. The signature Gaja flair now thrives in the Bolgheri landscape. The quality-driven philosophy here extends from their sixty-hectares of vineyards to their uniquely styled wines. Promis, a Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend incorporates exactly this - the family’s commitment, promise, and fulfillment of excellence. In the same spirit, the winery’s top wine, Camarcanda is produced resulting in a dense, richly fruited complex blend that lingers on the palate.
