Showing spectacular traits of the vintage, the 2010 Magari (50% Merlot and 25% each Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc) is a dark and modern wine with a thick fabric of dark fruit, blackberry preserves, spice and tobacco woven tightly together. The mouthfeel is exceedingly plush and there’s a sweet oak note of toasted almond or Spanish cedar on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2026. Angelo Gaja oozes enthusiasm for all his wine endeavors. But he shows a special degree of love and passion when it comes to his estate in Bolgheri, Ca’ Marcanda. As I write this introduction, I am sifting through my email inbox where Angelo has deposited a slew of areal photographs of his beloved estate, each one adding to a progressive timeline of the construction and olive tree landscaping completed over the past decade. Inaugurated in 2000, the winery sits on flatland but is almost completely hidden under a layer of earth. Unlike his historic cellars in Barbaresco that represents a confluence of ideals spanning many generations, Ca’ Marcanda is a utopian vision of winemaking contemplated and realized solely by Angelo.
Producer
Ca' Marcanda - Gaja
As the Gaja family’s second Tuscan property, situated along Italy’s coast in Bolgheri, Ca'Marcanda was purchased just two years after their Montalcino estate in 1996. Due to the ceaseless discussions that led up to this acquisition, the estate has been named, Ca’Marcanda - the house of endless negotiations. Inspired by the Piedmontese dialect, ca’ meaning casa or house, and marcandè meaning mercanteggiare or to haggle. At the beginning, the family established the house with the intentions of bringing fundamental organic practices to the region’s land and viticulture. Today, the property is one of the country’s finest producers. The signature Gaja flair now thrives in the Bolgheri landscape. The quality-driven philosophy here extends from their sixty-hectares of vineyards to their uniquely styled wines. Promis, a Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend incorporates exactly this - the family’s commitment, promise, and fulfillment of excellence. In the same spirit, the winery’s top wine, Camarcanda is produced resulting in a dense, richly fruited complex blend that lingers on the palate.
