There are notes of coal and graphite in the 2011 Valderiz, under which there is a nice layer of violets, ripe plums, dark cherries and cassis, nicely integrated. The palate has good stuffing, lively tannins and moderate acidity. It could do with a little more freshness, though. 35,000 bottles. I notice an improvement in the wines from Valderiz, a shift towards fresher, more drinkable wines, even when the majority of what I tasted was from the very warm and ripe 2011 vintage.
Producer
Bodegas y Viñedos Valderiz
Ideally situated on the central plateau in the heart of Spain, Bodegas y Viñedos Valderiz represents generations of artisanship and devotion. Today, Tomás Esteban and his sons, Juan and Ricardo, manage the estate. Stretching across 60-hectares in the Roa de Duero, with 35 parcels of vines planted amongst varying soil types the winery released their first vintage in 1997. Since then, Bodegas y Viñedos Valderiz has become one of the most renowned producers in the Ribera del Duero, with their forward-thinking and ravishing wines. As pioneers of organic agriculture practices in the region, Valderiz crafts each of their wines – vine to bottle – without the use of herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilizers. With strides to convert the vineyards to biodynamic farming methods since the early 2000s. This innovative and sustainable rational has allowed the native Tempranillo variety, Tinta del Pais to shine through. Each of the wines possess the Valderiz’s trademark of natural notes of black and red berries, warm spices with a subtle mineralistic, almost earthiness undertone.
