Blandy's Madeiras
Blandy's is perhaps the most known, long established Madeira producer. It was originally founded by John Blandy in the early 1800s when he left England for Madeira due to his poor health. The island's sub-tropical climate (or Madeira wines’ magical qualities) quickly healed him, enabling him to embark on the creation Blandy's Madeira. When the oidium plague hit the island in 1852, John had the foresight to buy up a good amount of old Madeira stock so that Blandy's could continue selling fine Madeira. In 1925, they were one of the prominent members of the Madeira Wine Association, a group of Madeira wine companies that formed together to maximize their exposure worldwide and minimize overheads. Over the years, up to 21 members joined but most disappeared, with Blandy's and only a handful of other brands - Leacock's, Cossart Gordon, and Miles. Blandy's is one of the largest producers on the island and produces a variety of types of Madeira from 3-year-old blends to the rarest varietal expressions of vintage Madeira.
