The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Guado de' Gemoli is a lavish and generous red wine that rolls over the palate with dark fruit intensity, ripe blackberry and plum, all framed by a thick layer of spice and toasted oak. It is a generous and opulent blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc (aged in new and neutral oak for 20 months). In a word, I'd call it hedonistic, with a 15% alcohol content. Some 10,000 bottles were made.
Producer
Azienda Agricola Giovanni Chiappini
Along the famed Via Bolgherese, Azienda Agricola Giovanni Chiappini sits in the very heart of the DOC Bolgheri zone beside the most important wineries in the region. The product of a farming family, Giovanni Chiappini moved from the Marche to the Bolgheri region in the 1950s, to establish this agricultural estate in 1978. Today, the agronomic spirit has been inherited by his two daughters, Martina and Lisa, who work alongside their father at the winery. The family has developed a great understanding of the terroir. Balancing the entire viticultural process with care – starting from the soil all the way to human factor. The property now stretches over 23-hectares, with a handful of separate vineyard plots. The land is planted to Bolgheri’s traditional varieties: mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, but also, Sangiovese and Vermentino. The organically farmed property produces two lines of wines: a couple of DOC wines –labeled with the vineyard names, and several Lienà branded wines – which are mono-varietal. The enterprise garnered a well-known reputation almost overnight. The culmination of both loyal collectors and impressive ratings coming from the most important critics has made Giovanni Chiappini a leading name in Bolgheri.
