The Syrah 2015 Pago la Garduña is the one bottling that tends to show more marked smoky and toasty notes, perhaps because the oak tends to accentuate the varietal notes. This is matured in 225-liter barriques, and perhaps larger containers would allow the variety to express itself with more freedom, as I find it a bit compressed when it ages in small barrels. It's structured, with round tannins and good volume. This is a wine that always gives me mixed feelings, as I feel it could be much better—perhaps it's a matter of waiting for the bottle. They produced 30 barrels, which filled 8,000 bottles and some larger formats. It was bottled in May 2017.
Producer
Abadía Retuerta
Duero Valley’s rising star, Abadía Retuerta is one of the world’s greatest red-wine producers. Situated in the village of Sardón de Duero, this impressive estate spans over 700-hectares, with 200 of those planted to vines. While the winery was commercially established in 1996, apart from the contemporary cellar, the stunning Romanesque monastery dates back to the 12th century. Lying just outside of the Ribera del Duero DO appellation, the estate now belongs to the Swiss pharmaceutical company, Novartis - that has simultaneously revived the ancient priory to its former beauty, and forged an indisputable reputation as Spain’s most critically acclaimed red producer. Famous French enologist, Pascal Delbeck and his successor, Ángel Anocíbar demonstrate Abadía Retuerta’s detail-oriented and quality driven values in their modernly styled classic wines. The wines are made from a meticulous selection of the best fruit, resulting in deeply colored, intense and noticeably structured reds. The labels range from the lighter Selección Especial, to the potent and layered top cuvées, like the premium Abadía Retuerta Petit Verdot, and the pure Tempranillo, Pago Negralada.
