The 1990 Le Pavilion is as compelling as the 1989. It exhibits slightly less opulence, but more power and weight. Black colored, with an extraordinary perfume of licorice, sweet blackcurrants, smoke, and minerals, it coats the palate with layer upon layer of decadently rich, superconcentrated, nearly viscous Syrah flavors. There is amazing glycerin, a chewy, unctuous texture, and phenomenal length. The tannins, which are considerable when analyzed, are virtually obscured by the massive quantities of fruit. I hope I live to see the day when Chapoutier's 1990 Ermitage Le Pavilion, Chave's 1990 Hermitage, and Jaboulet's 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle are fully mature! What a trio of wines these three producers have produced from this historic appellation! My best guess for the aging potential of the Ermitage Le Pavilion is that it is more forward than both the Chave and Jaboulet Hermitages, but should you have the good fortune to find a bottle or two, do not open it for at least 7-10 years. It should last for 30-40 years. Last tasted 12/95.

La Maison M. Chapoutier possiede una tenuta vinicola importante sulla famosa collina dell'Hermitage, ma opera anche come négociant, tra i più importanti nella Valle del Rodano settentrionale. L'innovativo e determinato Michel Chapoutier gestisce il domaine di famiglia dal 1990. Oltre a introdurre pratiche di viticoltura biodinamica nei vigneti, ha portato i numeri della produzione della proprietà su un altro livello, moltiplicandoli per dieci. Michel ha dato una grande fama a questa tenuta: il suo spirito pionieristico lo ha portato a utilizzare il braille sulle etichette, oltre ad essere il primo a commercializzare bottiglie da singolo vigneto dell'Hermitage, rendendo protagonista la Maison M. Chapoutier. Nella vasta collezione di etichette del Rodano, i vini migliori sono indubbiamente creazioni di riferimento delle relative denominazioni. Ora l'Hermitage è proposto sotto varie forme, sia in rosso che in bianco, e i vini hanno grazia e opulenza. I migliori vini, Hermitage e Crozes-Hermitage, sono etichettati con l'ortografia tradizionale, Ermitage. I vini, Ermitage, Ermite, le Pavillon e le Méal, sono rossi brillanti, potenti e morbidi.
