Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The 2009 Chateau d’Yquem is one showstopper of a wine and perhaps it is only in a vertical that you realize this is up there among the legendary wines of the past – the 2001 included. It has a wonderful nose that expresses the Semillon component majestically: heady aromas of lemon curd, nectarine, jasmine and honeysuckle that all gain momentum in the glass. The oak is supremely well-integrated. The palate is extremely well-balanced with an unctuous entry. You are immediately knocked sideways by the palpable weight and volume in the mouth, which is almost “bulbous,” with layer upon layer of heavily botrytized fruit. It builds to a spicy finish with hints of marzipan and pralines in the background that lend it an untrammeled sense of exoticism. The 2009 is utterly fabulous and decadent, a star that will blaze brightly and undimmed for many years. Drink now-2060+. Tasted March 2014.

Beautiful straw, golden color. On the nose, young aromas present of quince jelly, acacia honey, and apricot marmalade. The palate is perfectly structured, showing more character like candied tropical fruit, almost overwhelming with its own roundness, overtaking the palate with an incomparable persistence and elegance. A hint of saffron spice on the end with amazing ever-lasting finish on the palate - unbelievable! This is going to be a legendary Yquem!

Dense and unctuous, but with lacy detail already showing along the edges, as light toasty hazelnut and piecrust notes lead the way for creamed melon, mango and pineapple flavors, with hints of green plum and honeysuckle. There's mouthwatering drive on the finish, which drips with a rosehip honey note that keeps pulling you back. Stunning. Best from 2020 through 2055. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 10,000 cases made. –JM

What a fabulous wine. It's an explosion of fruit, yet it's very refined. I absolutely love the nose of this, with apricot tart, apple crumble, caramel and crème brûlée. Full-bodied, superripe and spicy, with mango, papaya, spices and sweet dried lemons. Incredibly long. It really rocks your socks off. Amazing. This could be even better than 2001. (April 7th, 2010)

Château d'Yquem

Located 55 kilometers south of the town of Bordeaux, the charming 400-year-old Château d'Yquem has a breathtaking view of the Sauternes valley. This notorious estate is recognized around the world as one of the greatest sweet wine producers in France. After over two centuries of ownership, the Lur Saluces family sold the property to LVMH in 1999. The sunbathed vineyards, covering over 100-hectares enjoy refreshing morning mists, and are precisely harvested berry by berry. Bottled without filtration, the wines spend over three years in new-oak barrels. Vintner Pierre Lurton, the former director of Château Cheval Blanc has looked over the house vinification since 2004. Unrivaled for its combination of lace, power and feminine prowess, d’Yquem wines easily defend their Premier Cru Supérieur status. With an impressive production, the wines remain at the top, their supreme quality is culminated by the Grand Vin, Yquem. ...
Sauternes

Sauternes

The Barsac/Sauternes area of Bordeaux is no doubt the most famous wine area of the world for its exceptional dessert wines made from botrytis cinerea, which is also known as “noble rot”. Located due south of Graves, it is a magical sub-region for not only are its wines nectar delights, but its countryside is also one of the prettiest of Bordeaux. Its main varieties are Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, followed by a smattering of Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris. Five villages make up the two appellations – Barsac, Preignac, Bommes, Sauternes and Fargues. There are excellent producers in both AOC areas though those situated in Barsac have the choice to write either “Barsac” or the more famous “Sauternes” on their labels. Though the region is known for its sweet wines, it also produces dry whites, particularly in vintages where there is less (or no) botrytis present. Its most famous châteaux include world renowned Château d’Yquem as well as renowned Châteaux Climens, de Fargues, Doisy Daëne, Suiduiraut, Rieussec and many others. ...
