Clairette Blanche is a traditional southern French variety that is often found in southern blends such as Châteauneuf du Pape as well as Languedoc-Roussillon and Provencal appellations. It can add freshness and lift to a wine as long as it is picked early. However, it can also ripen too quickly and oxidise easily, making it a more challenging variety to work with. Though it is an old established variety in its own right, “Clairette” can be used by some as another name for Ugni Blanc, Bourboulenc and others.
