Ansonica, also known as Inzolia in Sicily, is a grape that is found in both Tuscany, most notably in the Maremma region, and on Italy’s most southern island. It has been traditionally used as a grape in the production of Marsala, though crisp dry versions are becoming much more common. It is actually thought to have originated on the island of Sicily and is related to other indigenous varieties such as Grillo and Nerollo Mascalese, and this is where one finds most of Italy’s plantings of this grape. However, some state that it has Greek origins. It has a tendency to get very ripe and lose acidity so is often used to lend a nutty character and body to a blend.
