The 2012 Vermentino is a beautifully fragrant white wine with citrus and clean mineral notes. Easy peach and melon appear on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2014. Rocca di Frassinello is Paolo Panerai’s Maremma property that boasts a landmark winery built by famed architect Renzo Piano. The wines presented this year showed some inconsistencies, especially the ones from the hot 2011 vintage.

Rocca di Frassinello

Rocca di Frassinello

The vinous project, Rocca di Frassinello represents the first and up until now, only joint-venture between an Italian and French producer. The key players, the characteristic Castellare di Castellina of Chianti, and the wine-producing superstar, Domaines Barons de Rothschild of the celebrated Bordeaux Château Lafite-Rothschild, built this Maremma based estate quite recently. With the first vintages released in the early 2000s, the 500-hectare property consists of 80-hectares under vine. Combining the broad viticultural expertise of both estates, Castellare di Castellina’s use of the typical Tuscan grape, Sangioveto, and Domaines Barons de Rothschild’s use of the French staple varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Shiraz – Rocca di Frassinello produces several high-caliber wines. Rivaling the best of Italy and France, the top wine, Rocca di Frassinello has even become one of the leading competitors against Italy’s most famous, Masseto. This Maremma based winery, in the municipality of Gavorrano is an icon, a true extension of both the Italian and French wine-making talents. ...

Grapes

A popular and moderately aromatic variety that is planted throughout much of Sardinia, Corsica, western Italy (Tuscany, Liguria) and southern France under the name Rolle. It produces wine with good concentration and notable complexity which are fresh, offering up floral, citrus and orchard fruit aromas. Its most famous bottlings are those from Sardinia where it is often viewed as their star grape. In most of Italy, it is featured as its own varietal bottling, but in France, it is often used as a blending grape in both whites as well as rosés. ...

Tuscany

Tuscany

Tuscany is arguably the most famous of all Italian wine regions for not only does one have the renowned vineyards of Chianti, Montepulciano and Montalcino where Sangiovese reigns in all its forms, but it is also the land of the Super Tuscan, the cult wine style that laid the foundation of some of the greatest wines of the country. Some of the greatest bottles include Sassicaia, Tignanello, Ornellaia and Masseto. In addition to being the most famous, it is also one of the most spread out with vineyards as far north as Florence and as far southeast as the Umbrian border and as far southwest as Bolgheri and the Maremma on the Mediterranean sea. Though it is most famous for its reds, it also produces delicious whites including Vernaccia from San Gimignano and Vermentino from its vineyards closer to the sea. ...
