Galicia

The wines of this northwestern corner of Spain are produced in Galicia. This region boats a vinous history of nearly 2000 years old, today however, Galicia is best known for its Rías Baixas wines - crisp, aromatic whites made predominantly Albariño. As one of the five denominated wine regions, Rías Baixas is the largest and lies the closest to the Atlantic coast. Further inland there are the smaller DO regions of Ribeiro, Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras and Monterrei. The landscape here is defined by the dramatic Galicia coastline full of steep cliffs but also gentle coastal inlets. Inland the region displays healthy rolling hills that move eastwards towards the Cantabrian Mountains. Known as the “green corner” of Spain, the cool, moisture-bearing Atlantic winds along with the valleys of the River Miño make Galicia one of the wettest parts of the nation. Due to this climate, the production of white wine thrives more so than reds. Albariño is by far the white varietal king, but the region also cultivates Loureiro, Torrontes, Godello, Treixadura and Caiño Blanco.
