Catalonia

Situated on the Mediterranean coast, the Cataluña region is one of Spain’s most fascinating provinces, producing some of the most sought-after wines in the world. Stretching from the Pyrenees all the way to the border to the north with France, this northeastern region lies on the Iberian Peninsula and benefits from 580 km of Mediterranean coastline. As a diverse macro-region, Cataluña produces a wide range of wines and styles and is home to several sub-regions including: Alella, Conca de Barberà, Costers del Segre, Empordà, Montsant, Penedès, Pla de Bages, Priorat, Tarragona, and Terra Alta. There is a strong French influence for example in Penedès, which is the center of Spanish sparkling wine - Cava DO, but also in Empordà, where late-harvest wines are made similar to those found in the French Roussillon region. Just to the west of Penedès lies Tarragona, which has two superior sub-regions, Montsant DO and the high-quality Priorat DOCa region. Priorat and Rioja are actually the only two regions in the country that are awarded with DOCa status.
