Balearic Islands

Forming one of the 17 Spanish administrative regions, the Balearic Islands lie about 100 kilometers east of the Iberian Peninsula in the western Mediterranean Sea. The Balearic Islands include Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. While the wine industry today has remained quite small, the vinous history here dates back to the Roman times. There are two classified DOs, both found on the island of Majorca, the Pla i Llevant and the Binissalem-Mallorca. The islands produce several native varieties, like Manto Negro, Calley, Fononeu and Moll, as well as classical French grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.
