The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough is intensely scented of gooseberries, elderflower and fresh lemon with hints of white asparagus and sage. Medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with vibrant vegetal and citrus notes held up by a lively acid backbone and good long finish

Cloudy Bay

Cloudy Bay

Unarguably New Zealand’s most internationally-known winery, Cloudy Bay produces the country’s most famous Sauvignon Blanc. Established in 1985 by David Hohnen, both his Western Australian estate, Cape Mentelle, along with Cloudy Bay were recently acquired by the French luxury goods giant, LVMH. Located in Marlborough, at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island, Cloudy Bay takes its name from the inlet that lays just east of its home in Wairau Valley. It’s cool maritime climate combined with the vineyard’s advantageous sun exposure creates for the perfect environment for their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, smaller amounts of Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris varieties to prosper. Their Sauvignon Blanc, is exemplary, great on the nose, with endless fruit flavors which are complemented by a structure that provides an uncharacteristic aging ability. While the Te Koko is a barrel-fermented and aged version of the Sauvignon Blanc. Among the fourteen wines produced, their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also stand out as some of the best in the country. ...

Grapes

An aromatic variety that produces some of the world’s most exceptional dry whites as well as some of its greatest dessert wines. As a dry wine, such as Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé from France’s Loire Valley, it often displays what wine connoisseurs describe as « cat pee on a gooseberry bush » due to its notable grassy characteristics. In New Zealand, its most famous home outside of France, it often displays riper notes of tropical fruits such as mango and passion fruit. While Bordeaux often uses it as the main variety in its white blends, Sauvignon Blanc also works well and is susceptible to noble rot, helping create some of the region’s finest Sauternes. ...

Marlborough

Marlborough

As the country’s most significant viticultural regions, Marlborough can be found on the northeastern edge of New Zealand’s South Island. The first vines for commercial use were planted here the early 1970s and went through an impressive expansion during the following years. Today, the region is best known for their production of Sauvignon Blanc, which erupted on the wine scene in the 1980s and 1990s. Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs are characterized by their intense, unique and potent flavors. The region also cultivates other white varieties like Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling, and in recent years Marlborough has seen an increase of Pinot Noir plantings, that are proving to be quality, first-class productions as well.
