There is beauty here and the transparency is inspiring with dark berry, floral and mineral character. Full body and ultra-fine tannins. A glorious wine. A wine that will age for decades and beautiful now.

Bodegas Roda

Bodegas Roda

The leading new-wave producer in Rioja, Bodegas Roda has become one of the most significant wineries – and not only on a national scale – but an international one. Situated along the Ebro River, in Haro, the birthplace of DOCa Rioja, Bodegas Roda owns an impressive 76-hectare property planted to a majority of Tempranillo with a smattering of Graciano and Garancha. While the estate was established in 1987, the vines are well over 30-years-old. Their deep-rooted vines cultivate signature complex, mineralistic structured wines. With a clear-cut intention, Mario Rotllant followed his vision to create the most distinctive Riojas, unlike any that have come before. With the support of his enthusiastic team, including managing director, Agustín Santolaya Santolaya, viticulture specialist, Isidro Palacios Negueruela, and skilled oenologist, Carlos Díez De La Concepción, Bodegas Roda quickly took shape. No expense was spared, the team invested heavily in both the vineyards and the cellars. Today, the bodega is the perfect fusion of modernity and tradition. The contemporary styled winery, complete with the best technical facilities is perfectly complemented by the estate’s sustainable viticulture practices in the fields. This detail-oriented property produces two remarkable Reservas, Roda I is the flagship – a powerful and well-structured pure Tempranillo, while Roda is a touch lighter but still much more than a second wine. ...

Rioja

Rioja is without a doubt Spain’s most renowned classic wine growing area. It was named after the Oja River (“Río”) and established its excellent reputation over 150 years ago. It is divided into three sub-regions – Rioja Alta, the most western area that is considered to be one of the two most qualitative; Rioja Alavesa, which lies due north of Rioja Alta and the only one in Spain’s Basque area; and Rioja Baja, the most southern sub-zone which is flatter, warmer and produces many less expensive bottlings which tend to focus on fruit rather than refinement. Like neighbouring regions – Ribera del Duero and Toro – Rioja’s main grape is Tempranillo, which is supported by Garnacha (Grenache), Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano (Bovale Sardo). However, Rioja’s wines tend to be lacier and more light to the touch. While American oak has been used for many years for its wines’ ageing, a notable amount of producers have introduced French oak, making their wines more restrained and less spicy. In addition to their red wines, the region also produces white Rioja from Viura, Malvasia Riojana and Garnacha Blanca. ...
