An elegant, medium-bodied red, with hints of graphite and spice lacing flavors of crushed black raspberry, leather and dried lavender. Long and lightly chewy on the bright finish. Drink now through 2023. 41,000 cases made. –AN

Cantina Santadi

Cantina Santadi

Undoubtedly one of the Sardinia’s icons, the Santadi Winery was established in 1960. The cantina was created by a group of grape growers who joined together to set up a cooperative winemaking and marketing business. Coordinated by ETFAS, the Land Reform Board of Sardinia, the group built Santadi in the heart of the Sulcis peninsula. Originally focusing on bulk wine, the cantina has transformed for the better, with the arrival of a new group Board of Directors in the mid-1970s. Since then, the estate has prospered under the leadership of Chairman, Antonello Pilloni, and the late Giacomo Tachis, the world-renowned oenologist, who offered his vinous brainpower. Together, the grape growers, directors, marketing staff and winery workers continue to break through the main markets with their outstanding quality wines and powerful identity. ...

Grapes

Carignan is a late ripening, thickly skinned grape variety, which grows mostly in southern Mediterranean countries and to a lesser extent in the New World. For many years, it was viewed as merely a “working” grape, one that added flesh to a blend and nothing else. However, producers are discovering that when grown with low yields, most notably for very old bush vines, it can produce full-bodied wines with notable character and today single-varietal Carignans can be found in areas within the Languedoc-Roussillon and elsewhere. Though Carignan is its main name, it can change depending on where it is grown becoming Mazuelo in Rioja, Spain and Bovale Grande in Sardinia, for example. ...

Sardinia

Though Sardinia was an important centre of wine production for the Roman empire, in many recent years, the importance of its wine culture has waned and Sardinia has focused on other agricultural productions such as sheep for both meat and milk. More isolated than other Italian wine regions, its main wine style has often focused on sweet, dessert wines produced from Moscatos and Malvasias. However, it is a wine region on the move and today its bottles of dry whites and reds are getting some recognition. Its most famous indigenous white variety is Vermentino, and it was so important that Vermentino di Gallura was the island’s first DOCG. For its reds, many of its varieties are Spanish in origin due to Sardinia having been ruled by the Kingdom of Aragòn for four centuries. Cannonau (aka Garnacha) is its most celebrated red variety, accounting for 20% of the island’s production, though Bovale Sardo (Graciano) and Bovale Grande (Mazuelo/Carignan) are also seen. Giacomo Tachis, the long-term winemaker of Sassicaia and creator of Tignanello and many Super Tuscans, saw so much potential that he launched his own domaine, Agricola Punica, here in 2002. ...
