Zinfandel / Crljenak Kaštelanski / Primitivo

Zinfandel is a red wine grape variety that is very popular in the United States, particularly in California. Used to make several styles of wines, from dry to sweet reds, Zinfandel is most famous for its pink blush wine (White Zinfandel) that was created to cater to the American market in the 1970s. Since the 1990s however, Zinfandel has also been used to produce dry reds. Due to recent findings, Zinfandel has actually been found to be identical to Italy’s Primitivo grape, as well as, Croatia’s Tribidrag and Crljenak Kastelanki varieties. However, differences in terroir, climate and vinification makes Zinfandel unique compared to its European twins. It grows well in temperate areas, giving notes of ripe red fruits including black currant, blackberry and raspberry as well as spicy hints of pepper and liquorice. Although Zinfandel is a red wine, most of the Zinfandel grapes are used for the production of a rosé wine called White Zinfandel. The greatest examples come from Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley.
