Piedirosso

Piedirosso is an indigenous Italian grape variety which literally translates to “red feet” as its stem is red, ressembling a dove’s foot. Its other names, “Palombina”, (or "little dove") and “Pere'e Pallummo” ("dove’s foot") – further make the same reference. It is planted mostly in the Campania region and is a speciality of both Ischia and Capri islands. It was widely planted during the 19th century, but suffered after phylloxera struck the region. Though there were only 1000 hectares planted in the region in the 1990s, this indigenous grape is making a comeback mostly as a blending grape for Aglianico and Olivella. On its own, it often displays notes of red berries, espresso and earthy notes accompanied by strong mineral undertones, due to the volcanic earth on which much of it is produced. ...
