Nerello Cappuccio

A Sicilian dark-skinned grape variety, Nerello is divided into two varieties: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Nerello Mascalese is a red wine which owes its name to the Mascali area found in the province of Catania. This variety is the most grown black-skinned grape in Sicily and Nero D' Avola. The best expression can be found on the slopes of the Etna Volcano, between 350 and 1100 meters above sea level. The volcanic soils, rich in ash and mineral salts, give Nerello Mascalese unique characteristics, that are also shaped by the climatic changes in temperature. When vinified, Nerello Mascalese reveals fruity flavors, with a remarkable minerality and a persistent and harmonious taste on the palate. The aromas are reminiscent of the noble wines of Barolo and Burgundy. Both Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are late ripening grapes, which allows for aging in bottle. These two varieties blended together are part of the denomination Etna Rosso DOC, in which we find 80% of Nerello Mascalese grapes and 20% of Nerello Cappuccio grapes. The name, Nerello Cappuccio, derives from the cloak shape of its leaves, that envelop the bunches to protect them from the severe weather of Etna. The wine obtained from Nerello Cappuccio grapes is ruby red in color with shades of violet and a taste on the palate reminiscent of cherry. ...
