Mencia/ Jaen

Mencía is an autochthonous red grape variety, typical of northwestern Spain, particularly in Bierzo. These reds were once known for their light, fruity and fresh characteristics in the glass, however, over recent years, in hopes of gaining attention, they have become more intense and concentrated. Making for the perfect pairing for meat dishes, like duck or lamb. In general, red wines produced with Mencía grapes are velvety, fruity wines with an intense color and present tannins. The variety tends to show earthy, vegetal characteristics noted with minerality. It is also possible to produce rosé wines with Mencía grapes that are aromatic, soft and fruity. Mencía is also planted in the nearby Galician Dos of Valdeorras and Ribeira Sacra, as well as in Portugal where it is known as Jaen. ...
