Lagrain is quickly becoming the most important red grape variety in Italy’s northeastern corner of Trentino-Alto Adige. While this region may be better known for their whites, the sun-soaked hills provide the ideal environment for this fussy red. This grape variety is often produced as a varietal wine, officially under both the Trentino and Alto Adige DOC titles, but can also be blended with other native varietials like Schiava and Teroldego, as well as, international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. It is widely believed that Lagrain got its name from the town of Val Lagarina, which is located in Trentino and the variety dates back as far as the 16th century. Lagrain produces everyday fruity reds, known for their deep color and notes of black plums and cherries. These grapes craft wines with moderate tannins and acidify levels.
