Graciano

One of Rioja’s top varieties, Graciano (sometimes spelled Graciana) is a deeply coloured grape that can give much perfume to some of Spain’s greatest wines. Its quality comes at a price, however, as it is also one of the lowest yielding. As a result, numerous producers have stopped including it in their blends, though some producers value it so highly that they produce a 100% varietal wine to highlight its excellent quality. Outside of Spain, it is also widely appreciated in Sardinia under its pseudonym, Bovale Sardo. Though it was once very popular in the 19th century in southern France, its use also diminished in favour of Alicante (Bouschet), however it is now rising in popularity once again.
