Canaiolo

Mainly found in Tuscany, Canaiolo is a red grape variety used to complement Sangiovese wines. While Canaiolo may come in second or third to Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon in Chianti Classico, this variety is starting to gain attention for its unique characteristics. Today, Canaiolo is grown throughout Central Italy, however, varietal wines are rare. This black-skinned grape makes for softer wines with elegant aromas and moderate tannins. When blended with Sangiovese, Canaiolo perfectly complements the herbaceous flavors of Chianti wines. There is a white sub-variety called Canaiolo Bianco which is grown in Umbria. ...
