Bobal is a dark-skinned autochthonous Spanish grape variety predominately found in the southeastern region of Utiel-Requena (Valencia) and Manchuela. This thick-skinned, late budding red variety adapts perfectly to the hot and dry climate of these areas, making it one of the nation’s most planted varieties after Tempranillo and Airen. In the past, this grape was mainly used in blends with other grape varieties (Monastrell or Cabernet Sauvignon), to give a stronger color and enhance the wine’s acidity; however, more and more producers are now starting to make varietal Bobal wines that are characterized as dense, concentrated reds, with flavors of black fruits and chocolate. Bobal’s classic high-acidity makes it a rather flexible variety, which can be used to produce excellent rosés, sparklings and of course, fine reds. Apart from Spain, Bobal can be found in smaller quantities in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, as well as in Italy, on the island of Sardinia. ...
