Blackberry and currant flavors mingle with anise, nutmeg, forest floor and mineral notes in this sleek red. Muscular tannins are well-integrated, and balsamic acidity keeps this balanced. Expressive and harmonious, in the modern style. Drink now through 2030. 195 cases imported.

Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos

Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos

Mariano García, owner of Bodegas Mauro and Maurodos, is originally known for his work at the Spanish icon, Vega Sicilia. Today, he is busy running his own Aalto estate which he founded with partner, Javier Zaccagnini in 1999. With a shared goal to craft concentrated, dense, and modern-styled wines from Ribera del Duero, the young winery has grown tremendously in the past years. The 42-hectare property is farmed organically, and spread across the provinces of Valladolid and Burgos. Their flagship and most popular wine, a pure Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo), Aalto, is extremely dense and fruitful. The 2012 vintage was even ranked number six in The Wine Spectator’s “The Top 10 Wines of 2015”.

Grapes

Tempranillo is Spain’s most planted red variety and its flagship grape found in many of the country’s most sought-after D.O.’s and revered wines. It has thick skins and ripens early (“tempro” meaning early in Spanish). Depending on where it is grown, it can produce wines of different styles. In Rioja it is blended often with Mazuelo (Carignan), Graciano, Garnacha and/or Viura to produce medium-bodied wines that are fine-tuned. Alternatively, in Ribera del Duero, it can produce much more structured and full-bodied wines, when yields are kept to a minimum. Also depending on where it is grown, it can go by many names such as Tinto de Toro in Toro, Tinto Fino in Ribera and Tinta Roriz in Portugal where it contributes to the blend in Douro’s dry and fortified wines. ...

Ribera del Duero

One of the most important wine regions in Spain in recent years, Ribera del Duero is located in the greater area of Castilla Y Léon in north-central Spain. Despite being home to one of Spain’s oldest and its most glorified winery, Bodegas Vega Sicilia, it is a region that is relatively new in terms of popularity. Most of its 19,000 hectares of vines were only planted in the 1990s-2000s. It earned its DO status in only 1982. Despite it sharing its main grape variety (Tempranillo) with Rioja, its wines are distinctly different. This is in part due to its unique micro-climate. It lies between 700-850 metres above sea level, while Rioja is only around 460. This creates a short growing cycle with hot summers (with sometimes very cold nights) while the harvest can happen with snow. Its wines tend to be richer and more robust than Rioja’s more refined bottlings. In addition to Vega Sicilia who embraces a notably traditional style, Ribera del Duero is also home to Pingus, one of the most modern styles from the region. ...
