An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. This cuvee should shut down in the cellar and re-open in a decade or more. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2075.

Stunning aromas of fresh flowers, with blueberries, blackberries and currants that follow through to a full body, with super balance and finesse. The tannins are super polished. Such class here. Best ever from here. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try in 2018

This is amazingly expressive now considering how huge it is, with stunning espresso and warm fig confiture aromas followed by lush layer after layer of blackberry paste, cassis and plum sauce. A terrific loam underpinning strides in on the finish, which is weighty but sports serious cut. Equal parts fruit and earth. Best from 2018 through 2038. 26,665 cases made. –JM

The legendary Médoc estate, Château Pontet-Canet has been under the ownership of the Tesseron family for over four decades. However, its history dates back to the early 18th century, when royal governor of the Médoc, Jean-François de Pontet put together several vineyard plots in Pauillac. Just about a century later, the Universal Exhibition of 1855 confirmed the château’s elite status with a Fifth Growth rank. With 81-hectares of vineyards planted on the best gravel soils of the appellation, Pontet-Canet was one of the first Bordeaux estates to be both Certified Organic and Biodynamic starting with their 2010 vintage. Over the past forty years, in the interest of quality, to better reflect the unique terroir of their wines, the family has made several renovations to the estate, including technical innovations in the winemaking department. Today, the winery is run by Alfred Tesseron and produces quintessential Pauillac wines. They are big, powerful and dense reds with supple, well-rounded tannins that are complimented with intense fragrances of cassis and cedar. Both with spectacular ageing potentials, the estate’s second wine, Hauts de Pontet and the impressive Grand Vin, Pontet-Canet are impeccably made. ...
Pauillac

Pauillac

Whereas Margaux might be considered the Queen of the Médoc, Pauillac would no doubt be its king. Located south of St. Estèphe and north of St. Julien, Pauillac produces wines that are powerful, bold and capable of ageing many years depending on the vintage and Château. Its 1200 hectares of vines are planted on well-draining gravelly soil, close to Gironde estuary. It is this soil which creates such powerful wines. It is home to an incredible three of the five First Growths – Châteaux Lafite-Rothschild, Latour and Mouton-Rothschild – as well as other notable estates such as Châteaux Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Pichon-Longueville Baron, Pontet Canet and Lynch Bages. People often think that notes of pencil lead and mint are typical indicators of a wine produced on Pauillac soil. ...
