Average Critic Score
97.8
52 % Merlot, 41 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 7 % Petit Verdot.

This has such class and power. Aromas of blueberries and blackberries, with hints of violets. Full-bodied, with polished tannins and a juicy finish. Solid and extremely pretty. Fabulous finish. Try in 2020.
James Suckling
Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Palmer delivers a beguiling array of black fruit—warm plums, cassis and black cherry compote—with kirsch and wild sage sparks plus profound suggestions of fragrant earth, black truffles, iron ore and liquid licorice. Full-bodied, rich and decadently seductive in the mouth, the generous fruit is superbly framed with plush tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.
Robert Parker Wine Advocate
This is on another level from most in the appellation, with gorgeous layers of warm currant confiture, smoldering tobacco, licorice snap, warm paving stone and anise all framed by tarry but integrated grip. Stays sleek and well-defined through the finish. Should age beautifully. Best from 2015 through 2030. 9,500 cases made. — JM

Château Palmer

Château Palmer

Château Palmer is unquestionably the second best in Margaux, rivaling even its leading neighbor Château Margaux in some vintages. Established by British officer, Colonel Charles Palmer in 1814, today, the two majority shareholders are well-respected Bordeaux wine négociants, Mähler-Besse and the Sichel family. Categorized as a 3ème Cru Classé in the famous 1855 Classification, Château Palmer has long been established as a Médoc Super Second. With major investments in the estate’s facilities, and the addition of agronomist and oenologist, Thomas Duroux, Château Palmer has entered a golden era over these past decades. Producing two rich and layered reds, the impressive Château Palmer, comes the closest in style to the greatest Pomerol and Saint- Émilion wines due to its relatively high Merlot content. Their second wine, Alter Ego, tends to have an even higher proportion of Merlot, that displays the terroir’s perfume equally as well as the power and ripeness of their fruit. ...
Margaux

Margaux

Margaux is one of the main appellations in Bordeaux’s Médoc which follows St. Estèphe, Pauillac and St. Julien down the Gironde estuary, but remains north of the city of Bordeaux. It is renowned for producing wines that are deep in colour with flesh in its core and lots of silk in its texture. Many Bordeaux connoisseurs prefer Margaux’s charm, which still delivers longevity. This is mostly due to its slightly different soil which produces this softness and allows for a higher proportion of Merlot. It is home to the eponymously named Château Margaux, its exceptional neighbour Palmer as well as other top estates such as Rauzan-Ségla, d’Issan, Brane Cantenac, Giscours and Malescot St. Exupéry. Out of all Medocain appellations, Margaux has the highest number of classified growth châteaux. ...
