Bekaa Valley

Home of the modern Lebanese wines, Bekaa Valley is sandwiched between the snowcapped mountains of the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon ranges. Producing close to 90% of the nation’s wine, this region is blessed by the ample melt water coming from the mountains. These mountains also serve as a protective barrier from the deserts in the east and the maritime rains of the west. A respectable proportion of its wines is Arak – an anise-flavored spirit – which is also the country’s favorite alcoholic drink. The long, narrow area is planted with vines at around 1000-1200 meters above sea level, and these are the vineyards that tend to produce the finer wines. The cool air at this higher altitude slows ripening, and the result gives the grapes a greater acidity, freshness and balance. The soils can be quite rocky and gravelly with a limestone layer under loam or clay. The original Bekaa Valley vineyards were planted with Cinsaut, which was later joined by other French varieties. Today, most of the grapes grown are red Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, while the white consist of Ugni Blanc, Clairette and Chardonnay. While Bekaa is known as Lebanon’s modern vinous area, all vineyard work is still done by hand. The wines still cover a wide variety of styles, from tradition to modern, or somewhere in-between. This viticulture oasis produces the nation’s finest wines, including Chateau Musar which crafts both powerful, yet elegant red blends, and characterful whites. ...
