South Australia

Australia’s South Australia is the country’s most productive wine region which is responsible for approximately 50% of its production. It is comprised of 16 different wine regions including the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale and Kangaroo Island. It is also home to the majority of large wine production companies such as Penfolds, Jacob’s Creek, Henschke and Yalumba. Many of South Australian wines are blended across regions so instead of specific sub-region designates such as Barossa, only South Australia will be indicated. While many of these wines are less expensive, even Penfolds’ Grange is produced this way as Penfolds’ greatest aim is to have the greatest fruit that will represent a specific style regardless of which sub-region the fruit actually comes from. Known for Shiraz, it has some plantings that go back to 1860, making them the oldest Syrah vines in the world.
