Reviews & Ratings

Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and a 1% splash of Petit Verdot, the 2017 Montrose wine was run off into 60% new and 40% one-year old barrels where it was aged for 18 months. The grand vin represented 37% of the estate’s total production. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose takes some time to unfurl before revealing an impressively flamboyant core of black cherry preserves, warm cassis and baked plums with hints of red currant jelly, dark chocolate, licorice, cardamom and chargrill plus a gentle waft of candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic intensity with a very elegant, modest weight, featuring super-ripe, finely-grained tannins and tons of freshness to lift and show-off a stunning array of gorgeous black fruit and fragrant sparks, finishing very long and refined. This is an incredibly classy, poised and sophisticated Montrose!

This year, Montrose 2017 has a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, making it the ideal bottle for Left Bank lovers. Compared to previous vintages, this vintage is more elegant, yet it still has that classic Montrose body and complexity. Distinguished by signature spicy notes and black wild berry flavors, the wine has a vibrant acidity and tension, that keeps it very charming indeed. Blend: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Drinking window: 2030-2060.

Extremely aromatic with currant, wild-herb and fresh-violet aromas. This is regal cabernet sauvignon at its finest. The palate has unwaveringly long and defined tannins that carry such fresh, piercingly pure, redcurrant and cassis flavors. A twin to the superb 2015? A blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

André Kunz: Konzentriertes, tiefgründiges, verschlossenes, dunkler Bouquet, schwarze Beeren, schwarzer Trüffel, Edelhölzer, Feuerstein, dunkler Tabak. Kraftvoller, konzentrierter, vielschichtiger Gaumen mit dichter, dunkler Frucht, sehr viel feinem Tannin, vielfältiger, komprimierter Aromatik, muskulöser, eleganter Struktur, sehr langer, dichter, kräftiger Abgang. 19/20 2026 - 2050

This has nice breadth, with cherry and cassis notes moving through atop light tobacco and warm earth flavors. Very bright savory and iron elements add lift and cut through the finish. Tight, but everything is in place.—J.M.

Château Montrose

Château Montrose

Producing outstanding Bordeaux year after year, this 95-hectare property, Château Montrose is a classified Second Growth in the Saint-Estèphe hierarchy. Just north of Pauillac, Montrose is ideally-situated on a gravelly, well-drained plot that runs along the Gironde estuary for over a kilometer. The local microclimate, unique to Montrose works to mitigate temperatures, protecting the vines from devastating frosts as well as equally destructive heatwaves. The patchwork of a vineyard, planted on the world’s most privileged winegrowing terroirs, has been owned by Martin and Olivier Bouygues since 2006. In 2012 they brought in Hervé Berland, the former managing director of Mouton Rothschild to act as estate manager. This spectacular Saint-Estèphe château crafts three wines, they are immense, powerful, dense and long-lived. The leading wine, Montrose is a monumental fleshy, and persuasive red. ...
Saint-Estèphe

Saint-Estèphe

The most northerly “cru” of the Médoc, St Estèphe is located due south of the northern tip of the Médoc appellation. Though it is not home to any First Growth (though some of Château Lafite’s vineyards are also found in St. Estèphe’s borders – they have a special dispensation), it has long been famous for its excellent wines. Its two most important Châteaux are Second Growths Montrose and Cos d’Estournel, but other excellent estates also call St. Estèphe home such as Calon-Ségur, Lafon-Rochet and Phélan-Ségur. Its soil is slightly different from other appellations in the Médoc in that it has more clay. While this often allows a higher percentage of Merlot, the soil also produces notably burly wines with firm tannins that are capable of ageing many years. In richer vintages, the addition of Merlot can add a marked difference to its alcohol and texture when compared to neighbouring Pauillac. ...
