Average Critic Score
92.5
This particular vintage carries a beautiful acidity, freshness and elegance. The bouquet is very pleasing, with notes of juicy red fruits that continue to evolve and expand. At first, on the palate, it is all about the red currant and fresh red fruits, which develop with a lively acidity accelerating to long lasting finish. Accessible now with a bit of decanting time, but the aging potential is also there. Drinking window 2017-2032.

Bodega Matarromera

Bodega Matarromera

Partially hidden along the north hillside of the Duero Valley, Bodegas Matarromera overlooks the picturesque gorge in Valladolid. The 80-hectare estate produces well-known Ribera del Duero wines, featuring 100% Tinta del Pais, which is the local name for Tempranillo. Felix Gonzalez now oversees the innovative facilities and winemaking processes, as compared to previous years when the creator of the Matarromera Group, Luis Carlos Moro Gonzalez, was heading the vinification. The estate actually offers more than their award-winning wines, they also make cosmetics, olive oil and spirits, organize tours, and not to mention, they own their own hotel and restaurant.

Grapes

Tempranillo is Spain’s most planted red variety and its flagship grape found in many of the country’s most sought-after D.O.’s and revered wines. It has thick skins and ripens early (“tempro” meaning early in Spanish). Depending on where it is grown, it can produce wines of different styles. In Rioja it is blended often with Mazuelo (Carignan), Graciano, Garnacha and/or Viura to produce medium-bodied wines that are fine-tuned. Alternatively, in Ribera del Duero, it can produce much more structured and full-bodied wines, when yields are kept to a minimum. Also depending on where it is grown, it can go by many names such as Tinto de Toro in Toro, Tinto Fino in Ribera and Tinta Roriz in Portugal where it contributes to the blend in Douro’s dry and fortified wines. ...

Castilla y León

Castilla y León

Castilla y León produces an impressive variety of wines including those from some of the most famed Denominaciones de Origen. Among these lies the renowned Ribera del Duero, which crafts fine reds of Tempranillo (also known as Tinta del País, Tinto de Toro and Tinto Fino); but also Rueda which is better known for their whites made from Viura, Sauvignon and Verdejo; while Toro produces strong, powerful reds along the Portuguese border. Located on the northern half of the central Iberian Plateau which sits between 700 - 1000 meters, this region stretches from the north coast all the way down to Madrid, and to the west, Castilla y León borders Portugal. Here the varied landscapes and climatic conditions make this possibly the most eclectic wine region in all of Spain. Spotted with far-reaching valleys, great flat plains and steep mountain chains, Castilla y León is home to several unique micro-climates that produce a wide array of wines that cater to all tastes. There are the exuberant reds of Toro and the refined whites of Rueda, but also the Cava of Arando de Duero and the world class reds of Ribera del Duero – making Castilla y León a leader in Spain’s quality wines. ...
