Reviews & Ratings

Average Critic Score
94.7
A mature wine with berry, chocolate and mineral aromas and flavors. It shows extremely well for a less than perfect vintage. It's full and round with a wonderful silky tannin texture. It's so savory. This has come together beautifully with age. Drink or hold.

The 1995 Ornellaia (magnum) is remarkably fresher than the same wine from bottle. There is a warm, almost exotic quality to the luxurious, rich fruit. Sweet tobacco and licorice add further layers of nuance and flavor. In magnum the wine still has a few years left, but bottles are further along in their evolution and need to be drunk over the next few years. The 1995 is a rather unique Ornellaia in that only a portion of the wine (40%) finished its malolactic fermentation in barrique, while the majority of the wine underwent malo in cask. The blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, and the percentage of new oak is 39%. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2014.

This was one of the first clean, modern Massetos and it's holding up beautifully. Plenty of fruit and chocolate on the nose that follows through to the palate. Full-bodied, soft and round, with chocolate and cedar flavors. Very long.--Masseto non-blind vertical. Drink now. ?JS

Masseto

Masseto

Masseto is without a question, recognized as one of Italy's most iconic wines. A unique vineyard of just 7-hectares, planted upon soil rich in Pliocene clays, blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate and gentle sea breezes: this is the birthplace of Masseto. Set on a gently sloping hill, the vineyard is divided into three sections, which contain different clay-based soil types. The distinct variances between soil, climate, terrain, and tradition make up Masseto’s magnificent terroir. This is nurtured by a passionate and dedicated team which approaches each step of the harvesting and vinification meticulously. In the search of excellence, all of these components come together producing a unique wine, with impressive complexity and sublime elegance.

Grapes

Merlot is considered by many as the most luxurious red grape as it is known for its rich palate, velvety tannins and ample mouthfeel. Its home is originally France’s Bordeaux region and is responsible for Pomerol’s distinguished personality and firm grip (due to its unique clay soil), it also reigns supreme in St. Emilion where it provides its fleshy opulence. This seductress also has a claim to fame in some of Italy’s top bottlings, such as Masseto, Galatrona and Le Macchiole. ...

Bolgheri

Bolgheri

Bolgheri might be considered one of Italy’s newest wine regions. Located on Tuscany’s western coast due south of Livorno and in the region of Maremma, it is most famous due to its incredible list of Italian Super Tuscans, though it is its original wine estate, Tenuta San Guido, producer of Sassicaia, that brought further investment and fame to the region. Following on their success came the Antinoris with Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, Guado al Tasso as well as Tenuta di Biserno, as well as a number of excellent producers such as the Gajas and their estate Ca’ Marcanda, Castello di Bolgheri and Orma. Unlike most other Tuscan regions, its main grape variety is not Sangiovese but rather French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah due to its unique micro-climate and soil. As a result, Bolgheri can rival some of Bordeaux’s and France’s greatest bottlings. ...
