This is really impressive with complex aromas of cream, apples, pears and stones that follow through to a full body, ripe fruit and an intense, zesty aftertaste. Drink now or hold.
James Suckling
The 2014 Malartic-Lagraviere Blanc fulfils its potential that it showed in barrel. It has a well-defined and mineral-driven bouquet with light granitic aromas, a touch of sunflower seed and citrus peel. The palate is very well balanced with beautiful citrus fruit laced with nectarine, white peach and apricot. It feels very harmonious in the mouth, long and persistent, the aftertaste delivering a dash of spice that will put a smile on your face and leave you reaching for another sip of this excellent Pessac-Léognan Blanc.
Robert Parker Wine Advocate
On the softer side, with makrut lime, tarragon and Chartreuse notes layered gently together and backed by a youthful twinge of green plum on the finish.—J.M.
Wine Spectator

A name to look out for, as one of Bordeaux’s remaining six Classified Growths in both white and red, Château Malartic Lagraviére is one of the appellation’s finest. Belgian couple, Michele and Alfred-Alexandre Bonnie bought the property in 1997, now the newly renovated château is in the hands of their son and daughter-in-law, Jean-Jacques and Severine. By the turn of the century, the estate had adopted organic farming and reduced yielding practices, which has led to a great deal of heighted quality. Like many Graves properties, the 47-hectare plot dedicates only a small part to white grapes, a mere 7-hectares in this case, with the majority remaining planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Famed vigneron, Michel Rolland consults for their reds. With about 60% of the crop going into the Grand Vin, using only the best of the best fruit, Malartic Lagraviére Rouge has an elegant, well-balanced nature that with time develops into a complex and impressive wine. Along with the Château’s characteristic claret, the Malartic Lagraviére Blanc offers youthful and luxurious notes, over its fresh oaked base. ...

Grapes

An aromatic variety that produces some of the world’s most exceptional dry whites as well as some of its greatest dessert wines. As a dry wine, such as Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé from France’s Loire Valley, it often displays what wine connoisseurs describe as « cat pee on a gooseberry bush » due to its notable grassy characteristics. In New Zealand, its most famous home outside of France, it often displays riper notes of tropical fruits such as mango and passion fruit. While Bordeaux often uses it as the main variety in its white blends, Sauvignon Blanc also works well and is susceptible to noble rot, helping create some of the region’s finest Sauternes. ...
A grape variety that is far more known behind the scenes than on centre stage, Sémillon produces some of the world’s greatest wines, most notably Sauternes from estates such as Château d’Yquem and Château Climens. Notably susceptible to botrytis (aka « noble rot »), it sheds its shy personality for one of exoticism, revealing notes of honeyed truffle, dried mango and lemongrass. As a dry wine in many of the white Bordeaux blends, it exhibits an ample palate of discreet flavours, including beeswax and pear. It is also known outside of France, most notably in bottlings from Hunter Valley, Australia. These wines are completely different with crisp acidity, tightly wound flavours and lowish-moderate alcohol. Cellaring is necessary in order to coax them out of their shell. ...

Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Graves and Pessac-Léognan are both located south of the city of Bordeaux unlike the Médoc which lies to the north of the region’s capital city. In fact, its most esteemed properties – Châteaux Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion and Pape Clément are only a few minutes’ drive away. Graves is the larger region of the two, which actually houses the smaller “cru” of Pessac-Léognan. Located further south, its climate is warmer, which usually produces slightly earlier harvests. But its soil is also different – well-draining gravel (known as “graves” in French) as well as clay. As a result, a higher proportion of Merlot is planted here – as much as 50% in some estates. It has long been a well-known region for wine and was sought as early as the 1700s for its bottles. Due to its unique micro-climate, its wines can often be notably rich in riper vintages but also moderately herbaceous in cooler ones. Another more unusual characteristic is that it produces excellent white wines as well, which can sometimes be even greater than its reds. ...
