One of the more flamboyant and sumptuous wines of the vintage, this inky/purple-colored St.-Julien reveals thrilling levels of opulence, richness and aromatic pleasures. A soaring bouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal, graphite and spring flowers is followed by a super-concentrated wine with silky tannins, stunning amounts of glycerin, a voluptuous, multilayered mouthfeel and nearly 14% natural alcohol. Displaying fabulous definition for such a big, plump, massive, concentrated effort, I suspect the tannin levels are high even though they are largely concealed by lavish amounts of fruit, glycerin and extract. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040.

Gorgeous aromas of blueberries and blackberries, with flowers and minerals. Full body, with silky tannins and a bright acidity on the finish. Tangy and chewy. Muscular. Try in 2018.

60 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 29 % Merlot, 6 % Petit Verdot, 5 % Cabernet Franc. Fast 14 Vol. %! Mehrere Male verkostet. warten (2020 - 2045)

Solid notes of steeped black currant, ganache-coated fig and plum eau de vie pump along in this very dark red, but with well-integrated structure. Long and winey through the finish, with the grip extending everything nicely. Best from 2016 through 2026. 17,665 cases made. –JM

Château Léoville Poyferré

Château Léoville Poyferré

A longstanding Saint-Julien producer, Château Léoville Poyferré now ranks amongst the three great Léoville Super Seconds. Relatively small in size, this estate crafts massively weighted Left Bank wines that in the past decades have made several steps forward in quality. The maison has remained under the Cuvelier family’s ownership since 1921, however the property did not see major changes prior to the arrival of Didier Cuvelier in the 1970s. Didier hired the renowned vigneron, Michel Rolland and together they shaped Poyferré into a wonderful winery, one that easily rivals Bordeaux’s best. Along the Gironde Estuary, the château is sandwiched between the Margaux and Pauillac appellations planted amongst the gravelly sand and clay soils. Today, the 80-hectare vineyard and newly renovated vinification facilities represent the perfect balance between heritage and modernity. Poyferré is a prime expression of its terroir, a solid and impressively structured wine, this Grand Vin is pleasantly approachable compared to other Left Bank reds. The second wine, Moulin Riche is similar in quality for its value. ...
Saint-Julien

Saint-Julien

Similar to St. Estèphe, St. Julien is one of the Médoc crus that has no First Growths. However, it has some of the most respected Second-Fifth growths, including many “Super Seconds”, like Châteaux Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton and Léoville Poyferré. It might be considered the most “balanced” and homogenous of the crus, often offering similar a similar flavour profile to both St. Estèphe and Pauillac but often with a bit more refinement and poise. For these traits, they are often at the top of the list for Bordeaux connoisseurs. Other excellent properties also include the lesser known and small, Château St. Pierre and both Châteaux Lagrange and Talbot, both of which produce the most classified growth wine in all of the Médoc.
