Grapes

Merlot is considered by many as the most luxurious red grape as it is known for its rich palate, velvety tannins and ample mouthfeel. Its home is originally France’s Bordeaux region and is responsible for Pomerol’s distinguished personality and firm grip (due to its unique clay soil), it also reigns supreme in St. Emilion where it provides its fleshy opulence. This seductress also has a claim to fame in some of Italy’s top bottlings, such as Masseto, Galatrona and Le Macchiole. ...
Cabernet Franc is the older ancestor to Cabernet Sauvignon and is reminiscent in flavour, though often a bit lighter and more lean. While it comprises some of Bordeaux’s exceptional blends, there are a few châteaux that actually can have a predominance of this highly desirable and intellectual grape, including Cheval Blanc and Vieux Château Certan. While its original home is claimed to be Bordeaux, some of its greatest achievements lie in the Loire’s Central Valley, most particularly in Chinon and Bourgueil. Other notable plantings include the New World and in various areas of Italy. ...

It is, in fact, known for its labyrinth of limestone caves that lie below the town which were dug out to provide stone for its buildings. It is home to a plethora of top estates, including Châteaux Cheval-Blanc (which lies on the Pomerol border), Ausone, Troplong Mondot and Angélus. Its two main varieties are Merlot and Cabernet Franc, though small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Gris are also planted. ...
