A pretty and balanced Chardonnay with lemon pie, light creme brulee and honey. Full body, with bright acidity and a minerally undertone. Drink now.
James Suckling
Creamed apple, dried apricot and toasted hazelnut notes mix with hints of salted butter, fresh straw, honey and smoke in this layered white. Medium- to full-bodied, with sleek acidity and a nut-tinged finish. Drink now through 2019. 3,000 cases made. –AN

Cusumano

The Cusumano brothers, Diego and Alberto with the help of consultant, Mario Ronco hit the Sicilian ground running during the region’s modern wine renaissance around twenty years ago. They played a major role in the vinous revival, working beside the leading group of names, Tasca, Donnafugata and Planeta, they tirelessly fought to bring great wine back to this territory. The estate, in recent years, has decided to focus on developing their two Nero d’Avola inspired reds, Sàgana and Noà – the latter incorporates Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds even more depth and complexity. Their wines epitomize the flavors of the Sicilian awakening. Tasting richer, more sensual, and more distinct than ever before.

Grapes

Originating in northern France, Chardonnay is the white grape variety that has taken the world by storm. It is used in the creations of Champagnes (in both blends as well as Blanc de Blancs) as well as in the ethereal and refined white Burgundy, such as Chablis and Montrachet. Winemakers over the world began planting this variety often with the hope of recreating some of France’s vinous treasures. Easily malleable, it is actually a relatively neutral variety that grows well in different climates, though cooler climates still produce its most refined expression, and works well with or without oak, can be still or sparkling as well as simple or incredibly complex. Today, it is the 5th most planted grape variety and the 2nd most planted white grape variety (after Spain’s Airen). ...

Sicily

Volcanic in origin with an Mount Etna looming overhead, Sicily has long produced wine with a plethora of many other vegetables and fruits. For anyone who has visited this magical island, it is truly a Garden of Eden. Vineyards tend to be planted on the corners around the periphery of the island – Etna on the eastern side, which has become arguably its more qualitative area in recent years; Siracusa further south; Faro on its northeast side and numerous DOCs and IGT vineyards on its western coast, including the legendary Marsala zone. The smaller islands of Lipari and Pantelleria also produce distinctive wines. It has plantings of some international varieties such as Merlot and Chardonnay; however more indigenous varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Cerasuolo and Nerello Mascalese tend to take centre stage. Its most famous producer is generally considered Planeta; however, newer producers are rising and creating some notable, even exceptional wines. ...
