Trentino-Alto Adige

Trentino-Alto Adige is comprised of two different regions – the vineyards around Trento, a large town due north of Verona and those of Alto Adige or what Italians refer to as Sud Tyrol as they lie on the Austrian border. In many ways, it is more Austrian than Italian due to its German language, cuisine and its grape varieties which include many of those from Germanic countries and regions – Muller-Thurgau, Gewurztraminer, Silvaner and Schiava (also known as Trollinger in Germany) – but also includes indigenous ones such as Lagrein, a local red grape that produces a fairly rustic lighter styled wine, as well as more “international” varieties such Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its wines tend to be lighter and with less alcohol than neighbouring Fruili. As a result, they can be quite refreshing with good lift. ...
