Bolgheri

Bolgheri might be considered one of Italy’s newest wine regions. Located on Tuscany’s western coast due south of Livorno and in the region of Maremma, it is most famous due to its incredible list of Italian Super Tuscans, though it is its original wine estate, Tenuta San Guido, producer of Sassicaia, that brought further investment and fame to the region. Following on their success came the Antinoris with Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, Guado al Tasso as well as Tenuta di Biserno, as well as a number of excellent producers such as the Gajas and their estate Ca’ Marcanda, Castello di Bolgheri and Orma. Unlike most other Tuscan regions, its main grape variety is not Sangiovese but rather French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah due to its unique micro-climate and soil.
