Sardinia

Though Sardinia was an important centre of wine production for the Roman empire, in many recent years, the importance of its wine culture has waned and Sardinia has focused on other agricultural productions such as sheep for both meat and milk. More isolated than other Italian wine regions, its main wine style has often focused on sweet, dessert wines produced from Moscatos and Malvasias. However, it is a wine region on the move and today its bottles of dry whites and reds are getting some recognition. Its most famous indigenous white variety is Vermentino, and it was so important that Vermentino di Gallura was the island’s first DOCG. For its reds, many of its varieties are Spanish in origin due to Sardinia having been ruled by the Kingdom of Aragòn for four centuries. Cannonau (aka Garnacha) is its most celebrated red variety, accounting for 20% of the island’s production, though Bovale Sardo (Graciano) and Bovale Grande (Mazuelo/Carignan) are also seen. Giacomo Tachis, the long-term winemaker of Sassicaia and creator of Tignanello and many Super Tuscans, saw so much potential that he launched his own domaine, Agricola Punica, here in 2002. ...
