Marche

A vast region on the Adriatic coast, stretching from the south of Rimini to Ancona, Marche forms a somewhat triangular shape. Known around the world for their dry white Verdicchio wines, this Italian region carries a vinous history of thousands of years. With influences coming from various cultures and terroirs, the region is home to a wide range of vinicultural traditions and styles. From the rolling hills of Ancona, to the climatic effects from the Apennines to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east, Marche benefits from both warm and cool viticultural zones. Marche in the end produces many table and IGT Marche wines, but their greatest wines, making up to roughly 20% of their production are crafted under the region’s fifteen DOC and four DOCG appellations. The most famous DOCs for their lemony, dry whites are Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica. But the region also excels at cultivating reds, the finest are made from the Sangiovese and Montepulciano varietals.
