Lombardy

Less famous as a wine region and more famous as an industrial one, Lombardy is the region that houses Milan, Italy’s powerhouse city. Its vineyards are tucked under the border of Ticino, Switzerland, and surround Milan. Due to its cooler weather, it produces lighter styled reds such as semi-sparkling Bonarda and Pinot Nero and dry to semi-dry whites from Trebbiano in areas such as Oltrepò Pavese and Lugana. However, its most famous production would be generally considered Franciacorta, Italy’s answer to France’s Champagne. Mostly produced in the Champagne methods, these sparklers that are comprised of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Gris are generally more full-bodied and less acidic than their French counterparts, but are known for their potential for complexity.
