The violets and blackberries show wonderfully on the nose here, yet this remains subtle and complete with hints of walnuts. Full body, ultra-fine and firm tannins and a beautiful fruit and mineral undertone. Tight and substantial. So layered. Another example of finesse and beauty here with this pure merlot. Better in 2018.

Deep purple red, great concentration of fruits such as blueberries, blackberries and red plum. Excellent structure with a deep and complex evolution, which starts with silky and round flavors towards intense fruity character, elevating to a great and long finish. Medium to full body and very well balance even at this stage thanks to very fine tannins. Outstanding! 100% Merlot; 14% Alcohol

The 2013 Galatrona pretty much sold out in pre sales before it's official release last year. The quality is outstanding and the Merlot grape offers a heightened sense of sharpness and focus in a slightly cooler vintage such as this. Galatrona exhibits a plush and rich bouquet that is embellished with soft cherry and blackberry nuances followed by spice, sweet tobacco, chocolate and crushed granite. The wine is amply fleshed out and generous. It offers an incredible sense of overall balance and irresistible drinking pleasure.
During my last visit to Petrolo, Luca Sanjust offered to organize a mini vertical of his flagship wine Galatrona. How could I resist? Galatrona is one of Italy's top Merlots and the wine has done much to establish the grape's heritage outside celebrated areas such as Pomerol. In fact, the wine is often compared to great expressions from France, but ultimately Galatrona is most distinguished by its sweet and sunny Tuscan disposition. Galatrona was first produced in 1994 and fruit comes from a single vineyard site located adjacent to Petrolo's main building and winery. The wine was produced every year since then, except 1996. Luca tells me that wild boars ate the entire production that year. Just a few dozen bottles of the 1994, 1995 and 1997 vintages still exist at the winery today. Sadly, Luca only has two bottles of the excellent 2007 vintage in his possession.

A lush, fruity style, this red features cherry, raspberry, vanilla, toast and leather flavors. Needs to absorb the oak and find equilibrium on the long finish, where a mineral element emerges. Merlot. Best from 2018 through 2025. 250 cases imported. –BS

Fattoria Petrolo

Fattoria Petrolo

Owned by the fourth generation of the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family, Tenuta Petrolo, located in the Colli Arentini sub-district of southeastern Chianti, focuses on producing wines of the highest quality. Along with expert help, enologist, Simone Cuccoli, and consulting enologist, Carlo Ferrini, the 31-hectare vineyard produces one of Tuscany’s finest 100% Merlots. The rich Galatrona Merlot can easily compete with the very best of Pomerol. As their flagship wine, Torrione expresses the spirit of the property in a compelling bottle of Sangiovese. Torrione is to Sangiovese, what Galatrona is to Merlot. They complete their wine roster with five other wines, some being unique single-vineyard wines, like Campolusso, and Boggina.

Grapes

Merlot is considered by many as the most luxurious red grape as it is known for its rich palate, velvety tannins and ample mouthfeel. Its home is originally France’s Bordeaux region and is responsible for Pomerol’s distinguished personality and firm grip (due to its unique clay soil), it also reigns supreme in St. Emilion where it provides its fleshy opulence. This seductress also has a claim to fame in some of Italy’s top bottlings, such as Masseto, Galatrona and Le Macchiole. ...

Tuscany

Tuscany

Tuscany is arguably the most famous of all Italian wine regions for not only does one have the renowned vineyards of Chianti, Montepulciano and Montalcino where Sangiovese reigns in all its forms, but it is also the land of the Super Tuscan, the cult wine style that laid the foundation of some of the greatest wines of the country. Some of the greatest bottles include Sassicaia, Tignanello, Ornellaia and Masseto. In addition to being the most famous, it is also one of the most spread out with vineyards as far north as Florence and as far southeast as the Umbrian border and as far southwest as Bolgheri and the Maremma on the Mediterranean sea. Though it is most famous for its reds, it also produces delicious whites including Vernaccia from San Gimignano and Vermentino from its vineyards closer to the sea. ...
